Parasite to be Aware of This Summer

Swim wear, white beach, and bikini body--a perfect combination to beat the summer heat. A lot of us could not contain the scorching summer and the only tendency is to plunge into water. Many times than few, beautiful experiences with friends or relatives are being created during this season; however, when bad fate strikes, accidents happen.

I am about to introduce to you a disease that is correlated with the dry season  Swimmers itch. It is not a simply prickly heat or sun burn, but the cause makes it complicated. Otherwise known as Lake Itch, Duck Itch or cercarial dermatitis, it is an immediate immune reaction happening on human skin when water-borne microorganisms invade.

Causes and Symptoms of Swimmers Itch:
The main cause of this disease is from a number of various flatworm parasites in Schistosomatidae family. These parasites live commonly in freshwater snails and other vertebrates that serve as their host. At one point of their cycle, the larvae of the parasite named cercariae, leaves the host and swim freely in the water to find a new host. That's when they get a chance to enter into the human's body, who happens to just swim there to escape summer. The cercaria itself cannot affect humans but the inflammatory reaction that happens when they invade the skin causes a lot of problems. Initially, mildly itchy spots become visible. But turn into raised papules in an hour and the itch becomes double. Blisters may also show up after a day or two.

Treatment
This may be surprising but there is no evident treatment for this skin disease. Prevention is really the key. After swimming, especially in freshwater, dry the skin briskly with a bath towel. To ease the feeling of itch, over-the-counter ointments are widely available.

No matter how we enjoy summer time, it is also vital to be extra careful. We don't want to end up with regrets by letting 'parasites' ruin our moment.
